ALEC Conference Coming March 10th to Sacramento
Hosted by Lao American Advancement Organization (LAAO), the 2017 Annual Lao Education Conference will connect Lao American youth who are prospective college students with leading scholars, artists and community builders to discover the opportunities ahead of them and how to succeed. Among those presenting will be Sahtu Press founder Nor Sanavongsay.
Sanavongsay is a Lao American artist living in the San Francisco Bay area and the founder of Sahtu Press. He has been a member of the SatJaDham Lao Literary Project, the National Lao American Writers Summit, the Lao Artists Festival of Elgin, among many others. He's also the author of children's books inspired by Lao folktales, such as Xieng Mieng: A Sticky Mess. Some of his handiwork can be seen from companies like Encyclopaedia Britannica, Sears, Zoosk, and Barnes & Noble among others.
He was born in Mukdahan, Thailand during the last days of the Civil War in Laos. His mother escaped across the Mekong river while pregnant with him at the time. His family didn't stay too long in the Ubon Refugee Camp before they were sponsored to come to the US when he was 4 years old. They lived in Kingsport, TN with their sponsors for about six months before moving up north to Elgin, IL where he grew up and spent the early part of his professional life.
He graduated from Elgin High School and went on to study Art and Design at Northern Illinois University. His passion is writing stories, Illustrating them, and making things to entertain people. He chose this field because he loves how stories influence people and how it can make people feel. He also enjoys creating things, figuring things out, how they work and how he can make them better. Some of the challenges he's faced in this field is that there's always something new to learn. He takes the time to be as accurate as he can by doing a lot of research on the subject that he's writing about.
He believes great things can be achieved when you set your mind to it. Failure is a part of the journey. Success can't be attained without a few failures. If you fall, pick yourself up and keep trying. Only when you keep trying will you know your real strength. He'll be sharing many of his techniques with interested students who participate.
