People ask me this all the time: if I self-publish a picture book, how much could I make? Probably not a living, at least not at first. Make it anyway. Holding your own finished book is worth a lot, and knowing the real math early shows you how to grow it.

The math only needs three numbers.

  1. How many people follow you? Count your email list first. Those people usually buy more than social media followers.
  2. How many might buy? For most small creators, it’s 1 to 3 out of every 100. Start with 2.
  3. How much do you keep per book? Your price, minus printing, minus shipping and fees.

Multiply them: followers × buy rate × profit per book. With 500 followers, 2% buying, and $8 kept per book, that’s $80. With 2,000 followers, it’s $320. With 5,000 followers, 3% buying, and $10 per book, it’s $1,500.

If that number looks small, now you know which part to change. For most people the biggest lever is the email list. Selling in person helps too, since people buy more face to face, and so does keeping more per book by selling from your own site or bundling books with prints.

Most picture books won’t pay the bills. Doesn’t mean yours won’t, but make yours because you want it to exist, and let the money be something you build slowly.

I made a one-page worksheet so you can fill in your own numbers. I’m also writing a full guide on how I self-publish picture books, with checklists for every step. More on that soon.

Your numbers will be different from these examples, so treat them as a starting point.
