Jacob Singhavong’s Journey: Publishing “Sticky Rice for Lunch”

By December 17, 2023No Comments7 min read

As a creative writing coach at Sahtu Press, I’ve had the privilege of guiding countless aspiring authors, each with their unique voice and vision. Among them, Jacob Singhavong’s journey in creating “Sticky Rice for Lunch” shines brightly as a remarkable tale of cultural celebration and perseverance. While Sahtu Press was unable to align our publishing schedule with Jacob’s project, I’m proud to have witnessed and contributed to his path to publication. We recently sat down with Jacob to delve into his inspiring journey. I invite you to read his insightful interview and join me in extending heartfelt support and admiration for his remarkable achievement.

What inspired you to write a children’s book?

The inspiration for “Sticky Rice for Lunch” came from my childhood experiences of bringing Lao food for lunch. While I was pursuing my B.A. in Early Childhood Studies, my professor, Dr. Jocelyn Navarro (who inspired Ms. Jocelyn in the book) challenged our cohort to develop a research proposal of a topic of our choosing (related to early childhood). This proposal fueled my desire to explore how the lack of AAPI representation in children’s literature impacts identity in adulthood.

How did you develop the initial concept or idea for your story?

My love for Lao food and a desire to share my childhood experience bringing Lao food for lunch led me to the idea of writing a children’s book. Something that I didn’t share with Nor was that I developed the manuscript in one day. So, I found his email and sent him the “idea” of the book the same day. Following that, he said that Sahtu only reviews manuscripts, not “ideas”, so I developed the manuscript in 1-2 hours and sent it to him hoping he’d like it. The rest was history.

What challenges did you face in the early stages of writing your book?

Unexpected challenges arose in understanding and considering the tedious steps of the publishing process, including details like rights, “what an ISBN was”, readability, etc. The guidance of Nor at Sahtu Press was invaluable in navigating these challenges.

How did you go about selecting an illustrator for your book?

I found Ratu Megawangi on social media and this led to collaboration. Her skills as a children’s book illustrator brought the story to life, and I’m grateful for the fantastic job she did.

In what ways did the story evolve from your first draft to the final version?

While the core story remained the same, reading it to children, peers, and families during the developmental process allowed for natural evolution based on their feedback and reactions.

How did you balance maintaining your original vision with the suggestions you received during consultations?

I appreciated the feedback and suggestions I received during the developmental process, but remained true to my vision at the end of the day. The positive response from the book launch affirmed my choices.

What did you learn about the publishing process that you didn’t know before?

The publishing process is more challenging than anticipated. Authors, illustrators, and creators invest significant time and effort in their work, hoping that it resonates with readers.

What strategies did you use to market and promote your book?

Social media and networking with local businesses and Lao businesses played crucial roles in successfully marketing the book. Building partnerships and leveraging these networks opened opportunities for promotion.

What advice would you give to someone starting to write their first children’s book?

Be sure that you are passionate about the topic because it will get boring if it doesn’t interest you. It’s a challenging but rewarding process. Also, writing a book is not about the money, but it will be the greatest investment in yourself. There is room for everyone at the table, so go for it!

How has publishing your children’s book impacted you personally and professionally?

Publishing my children’s book has left a profound imprint on both my personal and professional spheres. The process of crafting this book served as a source of profound personal healing for me. I am confident that the resonance of this book extends beyond its intended child audience and will touch the hearts of adults who have shared analogous experiences. On the professional front, the publication of this book has proven to be a catalyst for significant opportunities. The success of the book has, in turn, opened numerous doors for me within the professional landscape. While the journey demanded considerable investments of time and financial resources, it stands as the most impactful and rewarding investment I’ve undertaken – an investment in myself that has yielded unparalleled personal and professional growth.

How was it to get help and support from Sahtu Press even though we didn’t end up publishing your work?

Sahtu Press was a great resource, providing support and guidance throughout the process. I am grateful to Nor and the team for the assistance and support I received.

Acknowledgment to my parents/family:

I am immensely grateful to my parents and family for consistently imparting the profound significance of Lao culture and the importance of cultural preservation in my life. Their unwavering commitment to instilling these values has shaped my understanding and appreciation for our rich heritage. It is through their guidance and example that I have come to recognize the enduring importance of preserving our cultural identity, a lesson I carry with me always.
